Trust God in the darkness where only He can see

Trust God in the darkness where only He can see

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your path straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6 My car is my war room. Well, one of my war rooms! My daily commute to and from work takes approximately one hour each way. It is probably the most calm and the least distracting 2 hours of my day. In the intimacy of my car I bare my soul to God. It is the place from which I ask him all the hard questions. It has become my

The roaring lion – attack from an invisible foe

The roaring lion – attack from an invisible foe

Every single day that we live and breathe we are fighting against an invisible foe. An invisible foe whose first line of attack is usually launched at our mind with his lies and his deceit. This enemy is not only deceitful, but he is also cunning, conniving and manipulating. And though we may not be able to physically see him, it doesn’t make him any less real or any less powerful. The plan of this invisible foe Our enemy has a well thought out plan. He aims to undermine or shake our confidence and get us to stop believing in

Time certainly does NOT heal all wounds

Time certainly does NOT heal all wounds

It is said that time heal all wounds. I beg to differ. In fact, I want to challenge this statement. It has been 40 years since my dad died.  I think of him almost every day.  My memories have kept him alive in my heart over the years.  The nine-year old little girl inside of me who watched her dad ablaze from an accidental fire, desperately wants to hold on to the good memories. The way he laughed.  His engaging smile.  The way he looked in his hats.  My dad sure loved his fedoras. I miss my dad and still

There is a cost to love like Jesus loves

There is a cost to love like Jesus loves

Have you ever prayed this prayer.. “Father, help me to love like you do” I have. In fact, it is a prayer that I utter quite frequently.  It is not only that I need help in this area of my daily living, but that, without this help, the potential for me to be a mean-spirited, ugly person becomes all too real. So, I find myself praying this very prayer whenever my flesh rises up and want to respond unkindly.  On the days when someone tries my patience a little too much or really wound my heart, I am tempted to respond in

Walking through the seasons of life

Walking through the seasons of life

The huge potted mums was lying on its side again.  Though larger than most, the plastic planter was no match for the strong winds and rain that were normal for this time of the year. Most of the beautiful red, yellow and orange leaves that had majestically crowned the tree tops were now lying in a bronze colored carpet on the ground. There weren’t enough leaves for the neighboring kids to frolic in but there was certainly enough to send my husband off to the local hardware store for a rake and recycling yard bags.  Yes, what was just a

Cultivating an attitude of thanksgiving

Cultivating an attitude of thanksgiving

It is early fall and the trees are slowly transforming into huge bouquets rich with deep hues of red, orange and yellow.  Soon they will give competition to the beautiful sunsets of October. The weather is much cooler than the days of summer and the squirrels and chipmunks can be seen scampering about.  They are on a mission to gather and store up their food for the wintry hibernation ahead.  Sadly, the trees will eventually lose their leaves and stand naked in the grip of an icy, cold slumber but for now they remain tall and proud.  Beautifully displayed in a

Transform your day with five minutes in His presence

Transform your day with five minutes in His presence

Every night I sleep with my phone charging on my night stand as most people do.  When I awake in the mornings I usually spend a few minutes lying in bed thinking about the day ahead or reviewing the day before. On the mornings when I am not focused or intentional, I have a tendency to absent-mindedly reach for my phone.  Without much thought I proceed to scan through my emails or flip through my social feeds.  It doesn’t take long for me to realize what I am doing and I remind myself this is no way to start the

When we struggle with our self worth

When we struggle with our self worth

How do you feel about yourself? We are bombarded every where we turn with images and articles that communicate to us what we should look like and how we should feel about our self. Whether we are sitting in front of the television set or standing in line at the grocery store, these messages are constantly coming at us and have a very powerful impact on how we think. It shouldn’t be surprising that the advertising industry is responsible for creating some of the insecurities women face on a daily basis. They pressure us to maintain a level of beauty

When God is Silent

When God is Silent

Think of the times you’ve had to leave home for an extended period of time, going off to school or perhaps even getting married. Some of the most comforting and reassuring words we can hear from our parents are these, “If you ever need anything, doesn’t matter day or night, just call, we’ll be here.” Even though there may be apprehension and probably some anxiety about the unknown,  somehow hearing those reassuring words help to make us feel calmer and less worried.  We know we can trust our parents’ words and that they will indeed be there for us.  Their

Are there weeds in your heart?

Are there weeds in your heart?

Every spring as soon as the weather is tolerable, my husband gets out the gardening tools from the backyard shed. It’s gardening time! Time to pull up the weeds and prune the dead branches and shrubs left over from the harsh winter months.  Then it is time to till the soil and mulch the garden beds before adding new annuals and even a few perennials. I find this process both tedious and tiresome and I have to admit I am more of a spectator than I am an active participant.  Gardening just isn’t one of my strengths nor is it one
